Access & Security Fencing & Minor Civils Works

Principal Contractor / Client: Kier Construction
End Client: Network Rail
Location: Multiple Sites (UK)

Project Overview

Wildside Limited delivered minor civils, access infrastructure, and security fencing works to support the installation and maintenance of digital billboard infrastructure.

Through early engagement and collaboration with the client, Wildside supported the development and refinement of design solutions, ensuring works were practical, buildable, and aligned with real site constraints. This enabled the creation of safe access routes, working platforms, and secure compounds within constrained and live environments.

Scope of Works

Turnkey package including:

• Vegetation and ground clearance to enable safe working areas
• Construction of engineered working platforms for installation and maintenance access
• Installation of access steps and safe entry routes
• Installation of hoarding, closeboard timber fencing, key clamp, security fencing systems with pedestrian and vehicular gates
• Associated minor civils works, including:
 ○ Excavation and ground preparation
 ○ Installation of sub-bases and hardstanding areas including concrete works and finishing

Key Challenges

  • Constrained & Live Environments
    • Works often undertaken adjacent to operational infrastructure and public areas
    • Requirement to maintain safe segregation and minimise disruption
  • Access & Safety Requirements
    • Access solutions for ongoing maintenance
    • Working within uneven ground and variable site conditions
  • Ground Conditions & Site Constraints
    • Variable ground conditions requiring adaptable installation techniques
  • Programme Sensitivity
    • Works required to align with installation schedules for digital infrastructure
    • Tight timeframes and coordination with multiple stakeholders

Wildside Solution

Wildside implemented a practical, site-led delivery approach:

• Developed site-specific RAMS and access strategies
• Phased works to safely manage access, clearance, and installation
• Created and delivered robust working platforms and access routes following client designs and tailored to each location
• Installed secure fencing and gated access systems to protect infrastructure
• Utilised experienced teams to adapt to varying ground and logistical constraints

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Zero harm approach aligned with CDM 2015
  • Safe segregation from public and operational areas
  • Environmental controls during vegetation clearance and groundworks

Programme Delivery

  1. Works delivered on programme across multiple locations
  2. Flexible resourcing to respond to changing site requirements and client priorities
  3. Efficient sequencing of clearance, civils, and fencing works

Outcome & Value Delivered

  • Creation of safe, durable access infrastructure for digital billboard maintenance
  • Installation of secure fencing and controlled access points
  • Improved operational safety and site usability
  • Successful delivery within tight programme constraints
  • Strengthened working relationship with Kier Construction
